S. confined to a state institution. Woode was convicted of killing Joseph Smith, reportedly because he wanted Smith's gun and his "pretty gold watch". Digital image created from glass negative. TIFF; JPEG; JPEG; JPEG; Thomas Reynolds was convicted of burglary in 1895 and arrived at the Colorado State Penitentiary on Oct. 16,1895 to serve a seven year sentence. Reynolds escaped on Jan. 22,1900 with three other men. During the escape reynolds and another prisoner killed a guard, William Rooney. Ryenolds was captured in Florence on Jan. 26,1900 and was lynched by an angry mob in Ca?non City. The Canon City Record reported that reynolds was lynched because capital punichment was outlawed in 1897 and the community was outraged that he would not be sentenced to hang for killing William Rooney.
