TIFF; According to the biennial reports wardens saw working in gardens as a continuous problem because it was difficult for guards to keep control of prisoners. There were many escapes made. These were documented in the reports. Yearly cost of maintaining guards for the prison farms was $5000. Farm land was all leased and grew many different crops including: grain, fruit, corn, beets, parsnips, beans, carrots, turnips, onions, lettuce, spinach and all vegetables except potatoes. TIFF; The chapel was completed by Hoyt on July 23, 1883. He requested that the state appoint a chaplain for the prison. Before this time the prison depended on local clergy and women from the Women's Christian Temperance Union to volunteer their services. Hoyt's report stated that most inmates attended church services and that attendance was not required. Duties of the state appointed chaplain included the following: inspect mail; daily rehearsal of orchestra, jubilees and choir; supervision of evening school; conduct religious exercises on Sabbath (consisting of Sunday school and preaching); personal visits as time allowed. TIFF; The first hogs were purchased in 1880. In 1881-82, 16,847 lbs. were killed and sold or fed to prisoners at a cost of $.10/lb. During this term the prison sold $790.09 worth of pork. According to biennial reports, the hog farm was more profitable than the dairy.Warden Cameron strengthened the barn and built a new stable.
