Clarence P. Hoyt was Warden of the Colorado State Penitentiary during three different terms spanning about two decades: Nov 30, 1882-Nov 30,1884; Nov 30, 1886-Nov 30,1888; Nov 30, 1898-Nov 30,1900. An album of 31 albumen photographs of the penitentiary was donated to the Canon City Public Library Local History Center by Mr. Hoyt's grandson and family. These photographs, probably taken during Warden Hoyt's last term, represent events and practices that shaped the Colorado State Prison system during its early history and delineate ideas that shape its later history.
